Paperplain is just one girl – a diminutive 19 year-old called Helen Page – and outside of her new mini-album having been mastered at Abbey Road in London, the music she makes is as homespun as it comes.

She employs a basic eight-track recorder to capture her perform every note before then multi-tracking them to achieve simple yet beautiful results. The labour intensive approach she adopts doesn’t even register when her cultured sketches slowly reveal themselves from behind the tape hiss.

Helen is finally making her music available on CD with the mini-album, Entering Pale Town, due for release in January 2010. Extremely accomplished yet playfully naïve, it’s a richly rewarding listen, serving well as an introduction and illustrating her music at its most pure.

“There is something of both Joanna Newsom and Nina Natasia in the newcomer Helen Page’s light but menacing debut single.” The Sunday Times
